Theatre Work

I recently finished a run of Molière’s play The Hypochondriac at the Crucible Theatre in Sheffield, playing the roles of Bonnefoi (an avaricious notary) and an Ill Servant, as well as providing music on the harpsichord and violin.

In 2021-2022, I was in the original cast of the current production of Cabaret at the Playhouse Theatre, playing the roles of Max, the owner of the Kit Kat Club and Herman, one of the Kit Kat Boys, as well as being 1st cover for the lead roles of Emcee (as Eddie Redmayne’s understudy) and Herr Schultz. I was lucky enough to go on many times for both of the roles I covered.

I’ve been working on stage for 15 years now and have racked up a diverse set of credits, from Musical Theatre to Shakespeare, Commedia dell’arte-influenced outdoor shows to puppetry, children’s theatre to Gilbert & Sullivan, crossover-classical singing to pantomime. As ever, the main appeal for me has always been the sheer scope and variety of work that is present in the theatre.

I love telling stories and discovering the multitude of different ways in which an audience can be made to suspend disbelief and be taken on a journey.

I love the immediacy and truth of acting, being present in the moment.

Credits

I graduated from the Musical Theatre course at the Royal Academy of Music in 2008 and was lucky enough to get my first job pretty much as soon as I finished, at the Bristol Tobacco Factory in a new musical called Doctor Love, which was based on a Molière play, L’amour médecin. I played the soppy romantic lead, Clarence.

This was quickly followed by an actor-musician rock’n’roll pantomime, Cinderella: The Panto with Soul, at Clwyd Theatr Cymru in which I played a geeky Prince Charming, as well as keyboards.

Other highlights include:

-touring Europe several times with Tour de Force Theatre (produced by American Drama Group), in French-language plays, Le Petit Prince and Mr Ibrahim et les Fleurs du Coran. These productions were rooted in a physical-theatre approach, creating scenes and images through shapes, movement and light, with minimal set and effects. It involved multi-roling, as well as the use of music, in which I played the violin, the accordion, percussion and the melodica!

-performing in number-one venues across the UK with the National Gilbert & Sullivan Company, in The Pirates of Penzance, Iolanthe, HMS Pinafore, The Mikado, Patience and Gondoliers, both as Ensemble and covering and playing lead roles such as Pish-Tush.

-playing the lead role of Wilson Mizner in Sondheim’s Road Show at the Union Theatre in London.

-touring the south of England several summers running with The Rude Mechanical Theatre Company, playing a plethora of different characters including animals (a sparrow, a magpie and a heron!), humans and fairies in new plays rooted in the Italian Commedia dell’arte tradition, but with a very modern twist, incorporating mime, clowning and instrument-playing.

Singing

As well as being musical theatre-trained, I studied classical singing privately for many years and even used to sing in a rock covers band as a student!

Versatility is my main strength. Styles I particularly enjoy singing are golden-age jazz standards (as sung by the likes of Frank Sinatra), Sondheim, 50’s Rock’n’Roll and 90’s indie.

Here’s a selection of singing clips:
